In addition to supporting the community of Pisac by contributing to educational programs, families in need of medical assistance and local firefighters, Ulrike’s directly supports the Kausay Wasi Clinic in Coya and Sweet Child Peru.
8-10 teams of volunteer doctors and medical staff from the US visit the Kausay Wasi Clinic every year. These teams have treated patients with hearing difficulties, gynecological and general surgery problems, restored sight to elderly people who were blinded by cataracts, conducted orthopedic cleft lip, palate, and reconstructive facial surgeries, attended to burn and accident victims, etc. Since opening in 2005, the clinic has provided health care services to more than 320,000 patients.
Sweet Child Peru was founded after locals in Pisac discovered that some children who attend school in the Sacred Valley were living in abandoned homes during the week because their walk to and from the mountain communities was too far or too dangerous. For some, the one-way journey to school takes over three hours. After hearing these kids’ stories and learning the needs of the schools and communities, Sweet Child Peru created housing for these children. The organization provides a home for Andean children in the Sacred Valley to sleep, be nurtured, learn and be loved.
